Karun Nair had a memorable outing on day 1 as he led India's remarkable fightback in the fifth Test against England at Kennington Oval. Coming at number five, Nair steadied the Indian ship with a valiant half-century.

Karun Nair Records Second Longest Gap Between Two Fifty-Plus Scores In Tests

For the unversed, Karun Nair's half-century in the Oval Test was his second fifty-plus score in Test cricket. Interestingly, Nair struck a fifty after 3149 days, recording one of the longest gaps between two 50-plus scores in Tests.

Nair had a stellar start to his career as he grabbed the limelight with a magnificent triple century against England at home. However, his inconsistent returns in the subsequent matches eventually led to his exclusion from India's Test setup.

Meanwhile, an exceptional Ranji Trophy season resulted in Karun Nair's comeback to Test cricket, with the batter managing to find a place in the Indian squad for the England series.

As Nair regained his mojo and brought up a half-century at the Oval, he registered the second longest gap between two fifty-plus Test scores among Indian players. His triple hundred against England was his last score of fifty or more which he recorded way back in 2016.

Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel still holds the record for the longest interval between two fifty-plus scores in Tests for India. The ex-cricketer took 4426 days to score a fifty when he struck a half-century against England in the Mohali Test in 2016.

When Karun Nair scored his last half-century, MI and CSK had two IPL titles each, while Shubman Gill was still an under-19 level cricketer.

Riding on Nair's fighting knock, India finished day 1 with 204 runs on the board for the loss of six wickets.
