In a major announcement on January 20, Rishabh Pant was officially named the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. The announcement was made during a press conference held at the LSG headquarters, where Pant was joined by the franchise’s owner, Sanjiv Goenka.

During the press conference, Goenka revealed that they were determined to acquire Rishabh Pant.

“We had kept a budget of Rs 27 crore for Rishabh Pant. We were adamant at getting him (during IPL auction),” Sanjiv Goenka said.

The decision to appoint Pant as captain signals a new chapter for LSG. The franchise did not retain their previous captain, KL Rahul, who had successfully led the team to playoff berths in their first two IPL seasons. With Pant at the helm, LSG is aiming to build a team that can clinch its maiden IPL trophy.

Meanwhile, reports emerged suggesting Nicholas Pooran was the frontrunner for captaincy, given his stature in the team. However, in a surprise move, the team overlooked the wicketkeeper-batter for the captaincy, despite retaining him for ₹21 crore.

Rishabh Pant Makes History In IPL 2025 Mega Auction

Pant has made history by becoming the most expensive player in IPL history. LSG secured his services for a jaw-dropping ₹27 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah. This massive deal surpassed previous records, including Shreyas Iyer’s ₹26.75 crore contract with Punjab Kings and Mitchell Starc’s ₹24.75 crore bid for his much-awaited IPL comeback.

Since making his IPL debut in 2016 with the Delhi Capitals (DC), Pant has been a standout performer. Over 110 matches, he has amassed 3,284 runs at an impressive average of 35.31, including one century and 18 half-centuries.

In 2021, Pant took over as DC’s captain and led the team to the playoffs that season. However, he missed the 2023 season’s captaincy due to a car accident that temporarily sidelined him.

On the cricketing front, Rishabh Pant will be seen in action in the England ODI series, which will take place on February 6, 9 and 12.
