For cricket fans across India, seeing MS Dhoni in action is always a delight. Known for his calm demeanor and sharp cricketing mind, the former Indian captain and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend is gearing up for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). A recent photo making the rounds on social media shows Dhoni practicing ahead of the tournament, which kicks off on March 21, 2025.

Popularly called “Thala” by CSK fans, Dhoni has been a cornerstone of the franchise for over a decade. However, in IPL 2024, he passed on the captaincy to young star Ruturaj Gaikwad before the season opener. Despite stepping down as captain, Dhoni remains an integral part of the team as a player.

Interestingly, Dhoni has been retained by CSK as an “uncapped” player under a new rule. This regulation allows players who haven’t represented their country in five years to be classified as uncapped, providing teams with more flexibility during player retention.

Why MS Dhoni is Still Playing IPL?

At 43, Dhoni continues to inspire fans and teammates alike with his commitment to the game. Although he last played for India in the 2019 World Cup, his passion for cricket hasn’t waned. Dhoni has made it clear that he wants to enjoy his remaining years in the IPL, especially after CSK’s surprising group-stage exit in IPL 2024.

This new uncapped player rule, reintroduced after being scrapped in 2021, has allowed CSK to retain Dhoni without impacting their core retention slots. For the Chennai franchise, having Dhoni around means more than just cricket—it’s about leadership, experience, and an unbreakable bond with fans.

The 2025 IPL, also known as IPL 18, will feature ten teams battling it out in 74 matches from March 21 to May 25, 2025. With teams preparing to finalise their squads and strategies, the excitement is already building.
