After a dominating ODI series win in the ongoing women’s Ashes, the Australian Women’s side just received a massive blow. Skipper Alyssa Healy has been ruled out of the opening match in the three-match T20I series due to a foot injury.
After whitewashing the England Women’s side, Australia Women are scheduled to face the visitors for the first T20I match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Before that, Healy’s injury has become a significant setback for the team.
No Allysa Healy For the First T20I
Following the final ODI on Friday, Alyssa Healy reported persistent foot soreness, revisiting an injury she first sustained during the T20 World Cup last October. Due to this, she has been ruled out of the upcoming first T20I match and is still doubtful for the remaining matches of the series.
In a statement, Cricket Australia said, “CA’s medical team is consulting with specialists to develop an appropriate management plan over the coming days. Her availability for the remainder of the series will be assessed as more information becomes available.”
The injury woes are hitting the Australian great hard for quite a sometime now. Last year, she missed the Women's T20 World Cup’s last group-stage match in Dubai. Her return to the WBBL was cut short by a knee injury, and also sidelined her from the previous ODI series against India Women. This injury added a new setback in her career.
Tahila McGrath To Lead But Who Will Fill Healy’s Place?
After the Australian captain has been ruled out from the first T20I due to a foot injury, vice-captain Tahila McGrath will lead the home side in this match. Healy’s absence has sparked speculation about her replacement, particularly behind the stumps. Beth Mooney has been named in the squad and she is a strong contender to take on the gloves.
Cricket Australia has a solid option in Georgia Voll to strengthen their top order. In the last ODI series against India, the youngster stepped into the top order and smashed an incredible century. Apart from her, Grace Harris can be another great option. The cricket world is all set to witness the first T20I live at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 20.
