India captain Rohit Sharma, often celebrated for his talent and humility, added another chapter to his legacy of kindness. During the 50th-anniversary celebration of Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium, Rohit showcased a heartwarming gesture towards former India head coach Ravi Shastri, earning admiration from fans and cricket legends alike.
The Wankhede Stadium, which has witnessed some of cricket’s most memorable moments, marked its golden jubilee on January 19. The event was a star-studded affair, featuring legendary cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravi Shastri, and Rohit Sharma, among others. Hosted by Mandira Bedi and Jatin Sapru, the celebration turned into a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
During the event, Rohit Sharma joined the stage alongside the cricketing greats. While others took their places, Shastri found himself seated at the corner. Rohit, always mindful of respect and camaraderie, urged Shastri to take a central seat next to Gavaskar and Tendulkar, ensuring the senior cricketer received his due recognition.
After the lively discussion about their cricketing journeys and the unveiling of the 2025 Champions Trophy, a group photo was planned. Both Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri insisted that Rohit stand in the middle, near the trophy, given his stature as India’s captain. However, Rohit humbly declined, allowing his seniors to take center stage.
Rohit Promises Fans To Bring Champions Trophy Home
During the event, Rohit also reassured fans about India’s preparations for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bring the trophy home and even promised to organise a victory parade at the Wankhede Stadium, similar to the celebrations following India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024.
India are set to begin their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by a highly anticipated clash against Pakistan on February 23. Their final league-stage match will be against New Zealand on March 2. All of India’s matches, along with the semi-finals and final, are scheduled to take place in Dubai.
