In a significant development, the ICC has awarded England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) the hosting rights for the next three World Test Championship (WTC) finals. Notably, the ICC is happy with the finals in England and wants things to remain the same.
The ICC released a press release where they confirmed handing the hosting rights to England, who will host the WTC final for 2027,29, and 2031 editions and the decision took place during the recent ICC AGM in Singapore. Although, it is yet to be revealed the venues for the next three finals.
"The Board confirms the awarding of hosting rights for the ICC World Test Championship Finals for the 2027, 2029, and 2031 editions to the England and Wales Cricket Board, following a successful track record in hosting recent finals," read the press release.
Notably, so far, three editions have taken place, and all of them have been hosted by England. Also, the board is happy with the recent final that happened between South Africa and Australia at Lord's, where the winners weren't guaranteed till the last day, eventually touted as the best final of the three editions.
ICC rejects BCCI's plea To Host WTC final
Notably, the BCCI is eager to host the WTC final and had also appealed to the ICC to award them the hosting rights for the next edition. However, the board has dealt a major setback as the prestigious Test tournament final will continue to be played in England.
Pat Cummins's suggestion Gets Rejected
Ahead of the WTC 2025 final between South Africa and Australia at Lord's, Cummins supported the idea to move WTC out of England and suggested that the rights to host the WTC final should be awarded to the winners of the previous edition.
According to Cummins' suggestion, the 2027 edition should have been hosted by South Africa, but the ICC is adamant to keep the tournament in England.
