England’s preparations for the second Test against India at Edgbaston have hit a slight hiccup, as fast bowler Jofra Archer has not joined the squad yet due to a family emergency. According to a report by Will Macpherson of Telegraph Sport, Archer is expected to link up with the team on Tuesday, just a day ahead of the crucial encounter starting July 2 (Wednesday).

However, it is worth noting that the reason for his family emergency is not known. Archer’s selection did not come without scrutiny. Having recently recovered from another injury setback, this time sustained during the 2025 IPL. The 29-year-old had to prove his fitness in domestic cricket before getting place in the squad.

Archer’s Comeback Boosts England’s Pace Battery

The return of Jofra Archer to England’s squad is after four-year absence from red-ball cricket. Despite being away from the team temporarily, Archer remains a strong contender for the playing XI. His inclusion signals England’s intent to rotate their fast-bowling attack due to the tight scheduling between the second and third Tests.

Archer's late arrival may prompt England to assess his readiness during the final training session on Tuesday. However, if he is available, he can be included straight into the XI. It is also worth mentioning that, should he play, it would mark his first Test appearance since February 2021.

England Expected To Announce Playing XI Soon

England are expected to name their XI for the second Test later today. The team management might face a selection dilemma, especially after a convincing victory in the series opener. England currently lead the five-match series 1-0 after a commanding win at Headingley and will now eye back-to-back victories at Edgbaston.
