Joe Root attained a major batting landmark during his century against India on Day 4 of the fifth Test. Jason Holder electrocuted Pakistan with his all-round heroics in the second T20I of the series. In other news, New Zealand all-rounder has been ruled out of the second Test against Zimbabwe.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Sunday, August 3.

Joe Root Completes Big WTC Record As ENG Near Win

Joe Root and Harry Brook charted cracking centuries for England against India on Day 4 of the series-deciding fifth Test at The Oval. While Brook hammered down 111 runs off just 98 balls, Root made 105 in 152 before both batters were dismissed by Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna respectively. England reached 339-6 by stumps, requiring 35 more runs with four wickets in hand on Day 5. Notably, Root’s innings also helped him complete 6,000 runs in WTC to become the first cricketer in history to breach the landmark figure.

Yash Dhull Smashes 1st Century Of DPL 2025

Yash Dhull shot himself back to prominence by notching up a match-winning century for Central Delhi Kings against North Delhi Strikers in the second match of the Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2025 season. The cricketer scored 101* runs off just 56 balls with eight fours and seven huge sixes to help Central Delhi Kings chase down its 175-run target with 15 balls and eight wickets to spare.

Dhull, who was part of the 2022 Under-19 World Cup winning Indian team, is currently eyeing his IPL comeback, considering he last played a match in the tournament back in 2023 for the Delhi Capitals franchise.

Jason Holder’s All-Round Heroics End West Indies Drought

Jason Holder bludgeoned 16* off just 10 balls and picked up sensational figures of 4-19 to headline West Indies’ thrilling two-wicket win against Pakistan in the second T20I of the series in Lauderhill. Holder also snared a couple of crucial catches to cap a remarkable all-round performance for himself. Pakistan batted first and made 133-9 from 20 overs, with Hasan Nawaz top-scoring through his 23-ball 40.

In response, a sizzling cameo from Holder after crucial runs from Gudakesh Motie and Shai Hope helped West Indies overcome a last-ball thriller to level the series despite Mohammad Nawaz’s 3-14.

Nathan Smith Ruled Out Of 2nd Test Vs ZIM, NZC Name Replacement

New Zealand all-rounder Nathan Smith has been ruled out of the upcoming second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo owing to an abdominal strain. The all-rounder picked up three wickets and scored 22 unbeaten runs in the series-opening first Test. Smith’s injury has prompted New Zealand Cricket (NZC) to name Test uncapped Zakary Foulkes into the squad. Foulkes, who has so far played one ODI and 13 T20Is for New Zealand, holds an experience of just 19 first-class matches. The 23-year-old averages 19.42 with the bat and has picked up 57 wickets in red-ball cricket.

Mohammad Wasim Recovers From Injury, Confirms PCB

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Wasim has attained full recovery from the side strain he suffered during the PSL 2025 season while playing for the Quetta Gladiators franchise earlier this year, as confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The 23-year-old has returned to full training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore after passing the fitness tests.
