The Kennington Oval in London has its own unique history, especially in Test matches involving hosts England and Team India. Ever since their first meeting nearly a century ago, several English batters have formed timely resistance against Indian bowlers, especially for the fourth wicket.
Celebrating some of the biggest match-defining stands, here is a look at five highest fourth-wicket partnerships recorded by English batters against India at The Oval.
5. Paul Collingwood and Kevin Pietersen – 114 runs in 2007
In the second England innings of the series-deciding third Test against India at The Oval in August 2007, middle-order batters Paul Collingwood and Kevin Pietersen forged a fighting 114-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Chasing a monumental 500 for a win, the two cricketers formed forces at 152-3 and extended England’s total past the 250-run mark. While Collingwood chipped in with 40 runs from 81 balls, Pietersen at number four bludgeoned 101 to top-score in the innings for the hosts.
Their partnership helped England save the Test on the final day, but the hosts still lost the three-match series 0-1.
4. David Gower and Allan Lamb – 129 runs in 1990
England middle-order batters David Gower and Allan Lamb crafted 129 runs together for the fourth wicket against India in the third Test of the three-match series back in August 1990. Following on and trailing by 266 runs, Lamb arrived to the crease at 334-3 to join unbeaten Gower. While Gower went on to plunder a majestic century with his 157* from 270 balls, Lamb grinded out for over 100 deliveries to score 52 runs with six boundaries and a six. Their partnership helped England save the Test and win the series 1-0.
3. Ian Botham and Allan Lamb – 176 runs in 1982
Batting first against India in the third Test of the three-match series in July 1982, number three batter Allan Lamb and legendary all-rounder Ian Botham shared 176 runs together for the fourth wicket to take England from 185-3 towards a monumental 361. Lamb got run out after minting 107 runs in 202 balls, while Botham went on to notch up a double century (208 off just 226) with 19 fours and four huge sixes. England mounted 594 in the innings and the match eventually resulted in a high-scoring draw.
2. Harry Brook and Joe Root – 195 runs in 2025
Harry Brook led England’s belligerence against India in the decisive innings of the fifth Test at The Oval in August 2025. Chasing 374 runs and forming forces with former captain Joe Root at 106-3, Brook blasted 111 runs in just 98 balls with 14 fours and two huge sixes. The two cricketers shared 195 runs together for the fourth wicket to steer England past the 300-run mark as they marched towards a clinical win on Day 4 of the match.
1. Wally Hammond and Stan Worthington – 266 runs in 1936
During the earlier years of Indian cricket, English batters Wally Hammond and Stan Worthington took full toll of India’s inexperience with the ball in the third Test of their three-match series at The Oval in August 1936, i.e., nearly 90 years ago. While Hammond compiled 217 runs with 30 elegant boundaries, Worthington registered the lone Test century of his career with 128 runs, before both cricketers were cleaned up by Mohammad Nissar.
Their partnership of 266 runs for the fourth wicket helped England chart 471-8d in the first innings of the match to set up the tone of an emphatic nine-wicket win for the hosts.
