Joe Root On The Verge Of Rare Batting Record In India Ahead Of IND vs ENG 2nd Test

Joe Root returned from Hyderabad’s first Test with scores of just 29 and 2 across both innings to kick-off England’s five-match assignment against India on a dreadful note with the bat. The 33-year-old, however, did make his presence felt with the ball by snapping five Indian wickets in the match.

Joe Root will now head into Vizag for the second Test at the threshold of a remarkable batting milestone, one which will help him join an elite league featuring the likes of Alastair Cook, Matthew Hayden and Clive Lloyd.

IND vs ENG 2023: Joe Root on the verge of this record

England’s 136-Test veteran Joe Root played his first match in Indian conditions back in 2012. To date, the cricketer has played 11 Test matches in India including his recent outing at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Combating world-class spinners on turning Indian surfaces, the elegant right-handed batter has tallied 983 runs from 22 innings in the country at a splendid average of 46.80. If he manages to add another 17 runs to his name, Root will become only the fifth overseas batsmen in history to compile over 1,000 Test runs in India.

Former West Indies cricketers Clive Lloyd and Gordon Greenidge, belligerent Australian opener Matthew Hayden, as well as Root’s ex-teammate and former English captain Alastair Cook are the only other overseas batsmen to have tallied more than 1,000 runs within Indian conditions.

While he will be expected to join the elite batting club in the first innings of the upcoming Vizag Test itself, England’s middle-order stalwart can further enhance his tally over the course of the remaining fixtures of the five-match series.

The second Test will be played at Vizag’s Dr. Y. S. Rajashekar Reddy ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium between February 2 and February 6.
