Throughout his distinguished Test career, 33-year-old English batting virtuoso Joe Root has unfolded a myriad of unforgettable innings all across the world, regardless of playing conditions on offer.

One of the most memorable knocks out of his elite batting profile remains the 218 he tonked against India on a turning M. A. Chidambaram surface in Chennai back in February 2021. His nine-hour long batting marathon also helped England seal the Test match by 227 runs to take a 1-0 in the four-match series.

When Joe Root crashed India with 218 runs

Under Joe Root’s leadership, England team travelled to India in early 2021 for a four-match Test series. Fresh from their 2-0 series triumph in Sri Lanka off the back of Root’s successive twin batting specials, the English veteran unfurled another masterclass at Chennai’s M. A. Chidambaram with a 218-run knock against Ravichandran Ashwin and co.

The seasoned English veteran occupied the crease for nearly nine hours and belted 19 boundaries and a couple of sixes in the process. He was eventually trapped in front by Indian spinner Shahbaz Nadeem after scoring 218 runs from 377 balls, thus listing his 20th Test century, his third 100-plus score in as many weeks and the fourth double ton of his career.

He also pumped out 40 crucial runs in the second innings of the match before England bowlers kept India down by 227 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

The contest, also marking the 100th Test of Root’s career, ended with him bagging the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

Unfortunately for England, the cricketer failed to replicate his Chennai success in the remaining matches as the visitors slumped to a 1-3 series defeat.
