Star Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah did not play in the third T20I between India and South Africa at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday. Bumrah returned home before the match due to personal reasons, forcing India to make changes to their playing XI in an important game of the five-match T20I series.
At the toss, India captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed that Bumrah was unavailable for selection. All-rounder Axar Patel also missed the match after falling ill.
Later, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a statement confirming that Bumrah had gone back to Mumbai and would not be available for the third T20I. The board added that an update on his return to the squad would be shared in due course.
Bumrah leaves IND vs SA series midway due to personal reason
According to latest development (PTI report as quoted by India Today),very close family member of Bumrah is currently hospitalised, which requires his immediate presence. A senior BCCI official stated that Bumrah’s return to the series would depend on how the situation develops.
“If all goes well, then he might return for the fourth or even fifth game (in Ahmedabad). But first priority is recovery of his family member," a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying to PTI on conditions of anonymity.
The fourth T20I will be played in Lucknow on Wednesday, December 11. Bumrah’s availability for the remaining matches remains uncertain and will depend on further updates from the BCCI.
India delivered a strong all-round performance in Dharamsala. After being asked to bat first, South Africa struggled to build partnerships as Indian bowlers struck at regular intervals. The visitors were restricted to a modest total of 117 runs.
In reply, the Indian batters chased down the target comfortably in just 15.5 overs. The seven-wicket victory helped India take a 2–1 lead in the series. The win was important after India had suffered a heavy 51-run defeat in the second T20I at Mullanpur.
Axar Patel ruled out of IND vs SA series
Meanwhile, the BCCI also confirmed that Axar Patel has been ruled out of the remainder of the T20I series due to illness. Shahbaz Ahmed has been named as Axar Patel’s replacement for the final two matches of the series.
