Indian cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle has questioned the T20 slog-overs ability of Virat Kohli. According to the commentator, Kohli is an “extreme example” of someone who should get out at certain junctures of a T20 game purely for the interest of his team, be it for RCB in IPL or for Team India in T20 internationals.

Harsha Bhogle signifies Virat Kohli’s T20 ability

Virat Kohli, who holds a strike-rate of 138.15 in T20 internationals and over 133 across all T20 matches, has minted nearly 12,000 runs in the format while holding a splendid average of 41.21.

While Kohli usually opens the innings for RCB in IPL and bats up the order for Team India at the international stage, he tends to find himself bumping into opposition bowlers during the slog overs of the innings from time to time.

According to Harsha Bhogle, Kohli getting out at a certain point during the death overs in a T20 game would actually be in the interest of his team, be it for RCB or for Team India.

The prominent commentator believes if Kohli gets out in the slog overs, the next batter in line might well be left with enough time to bludgeon a 6-ball 20.

While speaking at SHRM India Talent Leadership Summit & Expo 2024 in Mumbai, Bhogle said:

“Virat Kohli is a great example. Virat Kohli is playing Test cricket for India and he isn’t supposed to get out. Now, he goes to play for RCB, for India; beyond a certain point, it might actually been the interest of the side for him to get out. How do you reconcile to the fact that I am one of the greatest who have played the game but actually at this stage, it’s in the team’s interest that I get out because the person who is coming in will probably hit 20 of 6 balls. Viral Kohli is an extreme example.”

Harsha Bhogle, however, also added that Virat Kohli is capable of playing across all situations before signifying the fact that even the greatest of players need to adjust according to demands of the game and priorities of the team.

Kohli, currently on a sabbatical from Team India’s ongoing Test series against England, will soon be making his return to competitive cricket through the upcoming IPL 2024 season for the RCB. The IPL 2024 itself will commence sometime in late-March.
