In a surprising turn of events, Ireland’s young spin sensation Freya Sargent has decided to step away from international cricket for an indefinite period, citing personal reasons. She is just 19 years old.

Sargent has already made a name for herself on the global stage despite her short career. Since her international debut in 2023, Sargent has represented Ireland in 16 ODIs and 16 T20Is, picking up 33 wickets across formats.

In an official statement released by Cricket Ireland, 19-year-old Freya Sargent will be on an indefinite break from cricket due to personal reasons that haven’t been disclosed.

Graeme West, Director of High Performance at Cricket Ireland, expressed full support for her decision.

"Freya has been a valued member of the senior performance squad for the past three years, making a significant contribution both on and off the field. She has been an integral part of the team. Cricket Ireland will continue to support Freya during this time, the Team Management Unit are all agreed this is the best option available to Freya. Player well-being is paramount to us and takes precedence over everything else.”

Sargent's emergence was so spectacular that she was shortlisted for the ICC Women's Emerging Cricketer of the Year award in 2024. She also made her presence felt in the first two ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cups (2023 and 2025), where her performance became a talking point.

One of the highlights of her career was in the 2025 U19 World Cup, where a double strike in a single over changed the fate of a game.

Just recently, Freya Sargent made her return to the senior Irish side after an injury layoff. She played at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup European Qualifier in August and was also rewarded with a full-time central contract by Cricket Ireland.

Needless to say, Sargent’s decision comes as a big blow to Ireland, which saw her as a key part of their future plans.
