Sri Lanka’s all-rounder Dasun Shanaka has entered the record books, but not for a reason he would be proud of. The former Sri Lanka captain now holds the record for the most ducks in T20I cricket, having been dismissed without scoring 14 times in his career.

The Sri Lanka vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 Super Four contest turned into a one-sided affair after the men in green bamboozled the Lankans' batting order. After Kusal Mendis went back for a golden duck, Shanaka followed him, thus scripting an unwanted record.

Pakistan’s Hussain Talat knocked over Sri Lanka’s captain Charith Asalanka on 20 off 19 on his second delivery of the 8th over. With 58/4 flashing on the scoreboard, Dasun Shanaka walked into the middle, hoping to revive his team’s innings.

However, Shanaka attempted to punch a slower short ball outside off but only managed a faint edge. Wicketkeeper Mohammad Haris completed a sharp catch behind the stumps, leaving Shanaka out without scoring.

The dismissal handed Talat his second wicket in two balls, putting him on a hat-trick and leaving Sri Lanka in deep trouble at five wickets down.

Most ducks in T20I history

  • 14 - Dasun Shanaka (Sri Lanka)
  • 13 - Martin Akayezu (Rwanda)
  • 13 - Zappy Bimenyimana (Rwanda)
  • 13 - Kevin Irakoze (Rwanda)
  • 13 - Soumya Sarkar (Bangladesh)
  • 13 - Paul Stirling (Ireland)

With that, Dasun Shanaka now has 14 ducks in his T20I career, which is the most registered by a player in the format’s history. Before Shanaka, the unwanted record was shared by several players with 13 ducks each.

Rwanda’s Martin Akayezu, Zappy Bimenyimana, and Kevin Irakoze, along with Bangladesh’s Soumya Sarkar and Ireland’s experienced opener Paul Stirling, all had 13 ducks to their names. Shanaka’s latest dismissal pushed him to the top of the list.

That being said, Sri Lanka spiralled into a black hole after Pakistan’s bowling attack came out all guns blazing, finishing with 133 at the end of first 20 overs. Shaheen Afridi picked 3 wickets while Haris Rauf ans Hussain Talat contributed with 2 wickets each.
