Mohit Sharma, one of India’s most quietly effective white-ball seamers of the last decade, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Wednesday. Taking to his Instagram handle, the 37-year-old bid an emotional farewell to the sport, drawing curtains on a career marked by grit, comebacks, and memorable match-winning spells.
Former CSK star bids an emotional farewell
Mohit began his journey as a steady performer for Haryana, consistently delivering in the domestic circuit before Chennai Super Kings spotted his potential. His rise was rapid as CSK handed him the platform in 2013, where his sharp lines and disciplined variations turned him into one of the league’s most dependable quicks and earned him an India cap that same year.
"From representing Haryana to wearing the India jersey and playing in the IPL, this journey has been nothing short of blessing." Mohit wrote in his Instagram post.
The 37-year-old made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in 2013, later featuring in the 2015 ODI World Cup. His international career, however, lasted just two years, ending after an ODI against South Africa in 2015. In that short span, he picked up 31 wickets in 26 ODIs and 6 wickets in 6 T20Is.
IPL journey across four franchises
Mohit Sharma's IPL career spanned four teams. He featured for Chennai Super Kings from 2013 to 2015 and again made his way back in 2019. Punjab Kings also featured him between 2016 and 2018, Delhi Capitals in 2020, and Gujarat Titans in 2023-2024. Ahead of IPL 2025, DC secured him again at the mega auction.
His early years with CSK were prolific, 20 wickets in IPL 2013 followed by the Purple Cap in 2014 with 23 scalps in 16 matches. With some quiet years his comeback came in IPL 2023 with GT where he finished as the tournament’s second-highest wicket-taker with 27 wickets in 14 innings, followed by another great 2024 season.
However, Mohit could not replicate the same performance for Delhi Capitals in 2025 and was not named in the DC retained squad ahead of IPL 2026, prompting the seasoned pacer to finally call it a day.
