Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had a forgettable IPL 2023, finishing at the bottom of the points table with just eight points from 14 matches. Following such disappointment, expectations were high for SRH to revamp their squad for IPL 2024, and they did so impressively in the auction.

In a notable move, SRH secured Australia's World Cup final star, Travis Head, in a bidding war with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). 

Head, who last played in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2017, was bought for his base price of Rs 2 crore. SRH made a smart move by securing Wanindu Hasaranga for a steal deal of INR 1.50 crore. 

The team broke records by acquiring Pat Cummins, the World Cup-winning Australian captain, for a whopping INR 20.25 crore. They also added capped international cricketer Jaydev Unadkat for INR 1.6 crore and ex-CSK pacer Akash Singh for 20 Lakh. The final addition to their squad was Jhathavedh Subramanyan for 20 Lakh.

Between 2016 and 2020, the Orange Army was a formidable force in the IPL, winning their maiden title in 2016 and consistently making the playoffs. However, their performance has declined in the last three seasons.

Before the IPL 2024 auction, SRH showed faith in their core team by retaining 19 players for Rs 66 crore. With six available slots, including three for overseas talents, and a purse of Rs 34 crore (the second-largest among all sides), SRH prioritized getting backups and finding some of the first choice players which they can fit in their ideal playing 11 in the upcoming season.

While there aren't major concerns with SRH's squad, the management's focus for IPL 2024 will be on forming the best possible playing 11.
