Rajasthan Royals, the inaugural 2008 champions and 2022 runners-up, had retained their core players as they approached the player auction scheduled for December 19 in Dubai.
The retained squad includes key players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravichandran Ashwin, Prasidh Krishna, Jos Buttler, Trent Boult, and skipper Sanju Samson, providing stability to their lineup for the upcoming IPL 2024 season.
Following their release and retention decisions, RR found themselves with a substantial purse of Rs 14.5 crore as they prepared for the auction in Dubai on December 19. This financial flexibility allows the franchise from Rajasthan to strategically strengthen its squad with impactful players.
Entering the auction with the need for backups, RR demonstrated a calm approach with Kumar Sangakkara at the helm. Despite having a low budget, RR made a strong start by securing West Indies T20I captain Rovman Powell, who was released by Delhi Capitals (DC).
Engaging in a bidding war with Kolkata Knight Riders, RR eventually acquired Powell for Rs 7.4 crore. This addition enhances RR's lower middle-order, complementing the presence of Shimron Hetmyer.
Powell, making his IPL debut last year, has played 17 matches in his IPL career, amassing 257 runs at an average of 19.77, with one fifty and an unbeaten knock of 67* runs. RR further solidified their squad by expressing interest in Shubham Dubey, a 29-year-old hard-hitting southpaw, securing him for INR 5.8 Crore against competition from Delhi Capitals.
Known for his big-hitting ability, Dubey showcased his talent with a quickfire 58 against Bengal in this season's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
In another three acquisitions of the evening, RR purchased Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Abid Mushtaq and Nandre Burger, leaving them with only 20 Lakh in the purse and three slots available.
