West Indies T20I skipper Rovman Powell had a big payday at the mini-auction held for IPL 2024 in Dubai on Tuesday (December 19) as he was picked by inaugural champions Rajasthan Royals (RR) for a whopping sum of INR 7.40 crores.

One of the low-key names in the star-studded Set 1 of players at the bidding war, the Caribbean middle-order power-hitter became the first player to pop up for auction and generated an unexpected war for his services from multiple franchises.

Registering at a base sum of INR 2 crores, the experienced cricketer attracted a maiden bid from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) before the Royals entered the contention and the two teams forged a strong fight for their desired pick.

Eventually the Royals bagged the big-hitting giant's services as they bolstered their middle order for the next campaign, providing greater muscle and support lower down the order to their valiant skipper Sanju Samson and designated end-overs hitter Riyan Parag.

Powell, who played the 2022 and 2023 editions of the IPL for Delhi Capitals (DC), was released by the Delhi franchise ahead of the mini-auction in the Middle East.

Struggling to cope up with Indian conditions with his longstanding weakness against wristspin, the player would be hoping for a fresh start in the IPL after showcasing encouraging signs of improvement versus the tweakers in recent months.

Powell batted with strong command against the Indian wristspin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in August when under his captaincy West Indies clinched an impressive 3-2 series victory over the tourists.

The 30-year-old made his runs at a strike rate of 150.68 while averaging a decent 36.66 and has an overall T20I career SR of 143.27 after 66 matches for the Calypso Kings.
