The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction is reportedly scheduled to take place on December 15, with the retention deadline for all ten franchises set for November 15. This will mark the first time since 2022 that the auction is likely to be held in India, after the last two auctions were conducted overseas: 2023 in Dubai and 2024 in Jeddah.

IPL 2026 Auction Likely in India, Scheduled for December 15

Earlier reports had suggested that the BCCI was considering holding the IPL auction in the Gulf region once again. According to the same report by Cricbuzz, Abu Dhabi was the first choice, with other countries such as Oman and Qatar also in the mix. Franchises were informally notified about these possibilities.

However, a recent report from the Times of India states that the auction will return to India, although the BCCI has not officially confirmed the exact venue yet. It would not be wrong to say that hosting the auction in India will enhance fan engagement and media coverage.

With the IPL 2026 retention deadline approaching, teams will have to make crucial decisions about which players to retain and which to release into the auction pool. The franchises will look to strengthen their squads and address weaknesses ahead of the upcoming season.
