Mumbai Indians have been one of the most succesful teams in the history of the Indian Premier League. They have five titles under their belt and have been one of the most dominant sides in the league in the last decade.

Jewels are not scarce on the crown of Mumbai Indians. However, for a team that had made it a habit of winning the title every second year, the absence of a trophy for the past four years is concerning. With IPL 2025, they will be looking to announce their comeback by winning the title for the sixth time. For a title-winning effort, they will look to form a strong squad that will have a solid core and the right mixture of new arrivals.

Here is how Mumbai Indians might strategise to hold onto their core ahead of IPL 2025.

4 Capped Retention of MI for IPL 2025

Rohit Sharma

The current Indian ODI and Test skipper has been a part of the MI since 2011. He has captained the team and has led them to five IPL title wins. However, during IPL 2024, Rohit Sharma was removed from the captaincy role and Hardik Pandya was handed over the responsibilities. But besides being a captain, Rohit's importance as a batter in the T20 format is something MI will look to capitalise on. They would like to explore and utilise Rohit's batting approach without the captaincy responsibilities. Thus, Rohit Sharma will be the first retention of MI for IPL 2025.

Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya was traded from Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2024 by the Mumbai Indians. The captaincy stint of Pandya with the Gujarat franchise was a successful one as he led them to one title win and another run to the runners up spot. The success of Pandya influenced the Mumbai Indians to draft him ahead of the season. However, MI did not have a great time under Pandya in IPL 2024. However, given how the management operates, it is hard to imagine them removing Pandya after only one season. So, the second retention of MI will be Hardik Pandya.

Suryakumar Yadav

The current Indian T20I skipper has been one of the biggest match-winners for the Mumbai Indians for a long time. Suryakumar Yadav's presence in the middle order adds dynamism and flexibility to the batting line-up. MI will plan their squad for the upcoming seasons around him in the batting line-up. Therefore, SKY might be one of the first two retentions of MI for IPL 2025.

Jasprit Bumrah

While Suryakumar Yadav has been MI's prime stay in the batting, Jasprit Bumrah has been their leader in bowling. With his impeccable death bowling skills, Bumrah has been the architect of many impossible MI wins. The ace pacer is currently at his peak, and his experience will be priceless when it comes to grooming the younger players in the future squad. Jasprit Bumrah is an integral part of the MI set-up and will be one of the key retentions for them ahead of IPL 2025.

1 RTM of MI for IPL 2025

Ishan Kishan

The star Indian wicket-keeper batter was bought for INR 15.25 Cr by Mumbai Indians during the IPL 2022 auction. The management uses Ishan Kishan as an opener who can give them blazing starts at the top and allow time for Rohit Sharma to settle into his own game. The MI think tank rates Ishan pretty highly, and hence, even though they might have to release him because of his high price tag, MI will look to use the RTM card on him during the mega auction.

1 Uncapped Retention of MI for IPL 2025

 Nehal Wadhera

This young Indian batter has impressed a lot during his time in MI. Nehal Wadhera has shown great maturity under pressure and has played some impressive knocks when the team was in trouble. As the franchises will have to retain one uncapped player for IPL 2025, MI might use that slot to retain Nehal Wadhera.
