The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season is stirring much anticipation, particularly regarding MS Dhoni's involvement with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).  A crucial aspect of this decision rests with the BCCI and the retention rules they establish for the upcoming season.

MS Dhoni's Journey With CSK

Despite retiring from international cricket in 2020, Dhoni has continued to be a central figure for CSK. The 'Yellow Army' spent Rs 6 crore to acquire his services, and he immediately made an impact, leading the team to the finals in the inaugural season itself.

Under Dhoni's leadership, the franchise won their first IPL title in 2010 and followed it up with another title in 2011. Before the IPL 2011 mega-auction, MS Dhoni was retained for Rs 8.28 crore. Before the IPL 2014 mega-auction, his retention value increased to Rs 12.5 crore.

After CSK's return to the IPL in 2018 following a two-year suspension, Dhoni was retained for Rs 15 crore. He led Chennai to another title in 2018 and the finals in 2019. CSK clinched their fourth title in 2021.

Dhoni was retained by CSK before the IPL 2022 mega-auction, though he was the second choice after Ravindra Jadeja. Ahead of IPL 2024, Dhoni handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Despite Dhoni playing under Gaikwad's leadership, CSK failed to progress to the second round.

Will MS Dhoni Play IPL 2025?

Currently, franchises are allowed to retain a maximum of four players. If this cap remains unchanged, it is likely that the franchise will prioritise retaining younger talents and key players over Dhoni.

If the BCCI allows for five or six retentions, there could be a possibility for Dhoni to continue his playing career.

However, if the retention limit is set at four, CSK might focus on securing their core players for the future, which could see him transitioning to a mentoring or advisory role within the team.
