Bangladesh cricket hit by financial crisis [Source: @crictapish, @sgcrickett/X.com]
Bangladesh cricket is dealing with another major financial concern as political tension with India continues to affect business ties.
After recent reports of sponsorship troubles for top players, new information suggests that cricket equipment and apparel supply chains linked to India have also been disrupted.
This has added pressure on Bangladesh’s sports industry, which is already struggling due to economic challenges at home.
The situation is now impacting player contracts, manufacturing work, and the flow of cricket gear in the country.
Sponsorships and equipment deals were put on hold
The main concern comes from Indian sports brands slowing down or stopping their business in Bangladesh.
SG, one of the biggest cricket equipment companies in India, has reportedly paused the renewal of sponsorship contracts with several Bangladesh players, including captain Litton Das.
According to TOI, these deals were due for extension, but the process has now been delayed. At the same time, Sareen Sports Industries (SS), another major Indian brand, has decided to stop getting its products manufactured in Bangladesh.
SS had factories in Bangladesh producing sports apparel and equipment, but those orders have now been cancelled. This has affected local factories and workers who depended on these contracts.
Reports have said that SG has also stopped distributing its cricket equipment in Bangladesh for the past six months.
Earlier, bats, pads, gloves and other gear from SG were available in the country in large quantities. However, the supply has since dried up, making it difficult for players and clubs to lay hands on quality equipment.
How are India-Bangladesh tensions affecting cricket ties?
This is because the problem has been rooted in the strained political relations between India and Bangladesh. The relations have been aggravated in recent weeks owing to violence and political instability.
When BCCI approached KKR to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL team, it drew strong reactions from Bangladesh, with officials calling it unfair and politically driven.
In retaliation, Bangladesh have refused to travel to India for the T20 World Cup 2026, citing security reasons. They’ve formally written to the ICC for a change in venue request. However, with the tournament less than a month away, the logistical burden on the ICC is weighing heavily.
While ICC is yet to react to the formal request, Bangladesh remain adamant and have said they do not want to risk player safety or national dignity.
BCCI reacts to Bangladesh’s stand on T20 World Cup 2026
The BCCI has maintained a cautious and hands-off stance amid Bangladesh’s demand to shift its T20 World Cup 2026 matches out of India. Secretary Devajit Saikia made it clear that the issue does not fall under the BCCI’s authority.
The final decision rests solely with the ICC. Speaking to PTI, Saikia said the board’s recent meetings were focused on cricketing matters and the Centre of Excellence, not on Bangladesh’s participation or venue concerns.
The BCCI’s response indicates that it does not want to be drawn into a sensitive diplomatic issue.
By stressing that it falls out of its domain, the Indian board has effectively distanced itself from the ongoing standoff between Bangladesh and the ICC.
