According to a report by Sports Today, veteran Indian cricket stars, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are all set to be back in the T20I side for the upcoming series against Afghanistan.

Earlier, there were speculations that the duo would no longer be seen in India’s T20I team. Various reports also suggested that BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar had visited South Africa to inform the stalwarts that they would no longer be in India’s T20I scheme of things.

However, the report has rubbished all such rumours. Notably, Kohli and Rohit haven’t represented the Indian T20I team since the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final encounter against England.

It was also largely due to the fact that the 2023 World Cup was supposed to be held this year, and the duo had put all their focus on the marquee event. But the speculations turned big after the two missed out on the recent T20I series against Australia and South Africa.

In the absence of Hardik Pandya, who got injured during the 2023 World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav led the team in both the series. India won the T20I series against Australia 4-1, while the one against South Africa resulted in a 1-1 draw.

It has now been learned that both Rohit and Virat are set to be back in the side for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan, the squad of which is likely to be announced today or tomorrow.

The three T20Is between India and Afghanistan are slated to be played on the 11th, 14th, and 17th of January 2023.

Suryakumar, Pandya to miss Afghanistan T20Is

Surykumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya will miss the T20I series against Afghanistan. Pandya is still recovering from the ankle injury he suffered during the 2023 World Cup, while Surykumar hurt his ankle in the last match of the T20I series vs South Africa. He will be out of the action for at least one month.

Meanwhile, the selectors have shortlisted 25-30 players to select India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. India don’t have any T20I assignment after the Afghanistan series. Thus, the selectors will have a keen eye on the performances of the players in the IPL 2024.
