As the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 nears, the preparation for the coveted event gains momentum.

Currently playing Asia Cup 2023 in Sri Lanka, Team India will face most probably their toughest opponents, Australia in their final ODI series before the World Cup in October. Australia visit India for a three-match ODI series this month, which will also see five T20Is.

As reported by InsideSport, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) national men's senior selection committee led by former all-rounder Ajit Agarkar will announce India's squad for the Australia ODIs sometime this week.

While key World Cup starters will find a place in the squad, out-of-favour wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is likely to be omitted. Apart from Sanju, youngster Tilak Varma is unlikely to get a spot in the squad.

Speaking to InsideSport, an unnamed BCCI official explained that with KL Rahul regaining full fitness Samson's selection is difficult.

Here's what BCCI official said

“See, KL is fully fit and there won’t be three wicket-keepers. That is the unfortunate reason why Sanju has to miss out. He has been captaining a side and understands the tough calls the selection committee needs to take. He will feature in the T20 series against Australia,”

While Varma is with the Indian team in Sri Lanka, the MI batter will return on Monday and head straight to NCA and join the Indian team's training camp for the upcoming Asian Games 2023.

With availability over Shreyas Iyer still doubtful, Varma might get a lucky break in the ODIs against Australia. The first ODI will be player on September 22 at Mohali, followed by matches at Indore and Rajkot on September 24 and 27, respectively.
