December 3 was a rollercoaster ride for cricket fans. At Raipur, South Africa beat India in the second ODI, where Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad took centre stage.

Off the field, the BCCI announced the squad for the T20I series against South Africa.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Wednesday, December 3.

South Africa upset India to chase a record 359 runs

India and South Africa produced a high-scoring thriller in the second ODI at Raipur, with over 700 runs scored. After early wickets, Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad added 195 runs for the third wicket. KL Rahul’s unbeaten 66 pushed India to 358/5. 

In reply, Aiden Markram’s brilliant century laid the platform for the chase. Strong contributions from Breetzke, Brevis, and Corbin Bosch helped South Africa reach the target, winning by four wickets and levelling the series. This is Proteas’ third-highest run chases in ODIs.

Virat Kohli-Ruturaj Gaikwad slam centuries in Raipur

In the second ODI against South Africa, Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad lit up Raipur with magnificent centuries to power India to 358/5. Coming in with India struggling at 62/2, the duo stitched a brilliant 195-run stand that completely turned the game on its head. 

Kohli scored his second consecutive century of the series and also his 53rd ODI ton and 84th international century. Meanwhile, Gaikwad registered his maiden ODI hundred in style. 

Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya back in India’s T20I squad

BCCI has announced a 15-member squad for the T20I series against South Africa, with Hardik Pandya returning after regaining full fitness. Shubman Gill has also been selected, though his participation depends on final clearance from the BCCI’s medical team. 

Suryakumar Yadav will continue as captain, with strong all-round and pace support from Axar Patel, Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and others. Rinku Singh, however, has been axed. The five-match series will be played from December 9 to 19.

India unveil team jersey for T20 World Cup 2026

BCCI unveiled Team India’s new jersey for the T20 World Cup 2026 during the second ODI against South Africa in Raipur. The launch took place after the first innings. 

The jersey, featuring a striking blend of orange and blue, was officially revealed by brand ambassador Rohit Sharma alongside young star Tilak Varma. With India set to co-host the tournament with Sri Lanka, the new kit had a mix of tradition and modern vision.

Mohit Sharma retires from all forms of cricket

Indian pacer Mohit Sharma announced his retirement from all forms of cricket at 37, ending a career defined by discipline and comebacks. From rising through Haryana and shining bright with CSK, he won the Purple Cap in 2014 and did well again with the Gujarat Titans in 2023. 

Internationally, he claimed 31 wickets in 26 ODIs after debuting in 2013. Although he returned to the Delhi Capitals in 2025, a dip in form and exclusion from IPL 2026 plans prompted his emotional farewell to the game.
