Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan has been summoned by Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning in connection with a money laundering case linked to an illegal betting app. Officials said the case involves the platform 1xBet, which Dhawan is alleged to have promoted on social media.

According to PTI, the ED will record Dhawan’s statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The agency wants to understand how he was associated with the app and whether his endorsements had any role in its promotion.

Shikhar Dhawan To Be Questioned By ED Over Betting App Promotion

Dhawan, 39, who has represented India in all formats of the game, is believed to have been connected to the betting app through certain promotional activities.

This summons comes at a time when the ED is probing multiple cases of illegal betting and gaming apps that have allegedly cheated people of crores of rupees and also avoided paying huge amounts in taxes. Officials say that several celebrities, including cricketers and film stars, have come under the radar for promoting such platforms.

Recently, former cricketer Suresh Raina was also questioned in the same matter. The agency asked him about his endorsements and possible links to 1xBet.

Apart from Raina and Dhawan, popular names from the entertainment industry such as Vijay Deverakonda, Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, Harbhajan Singh, and Urvashi Rautela have also faced questions for allegedly promoting betting and gambling-related apps.

The Union Government has taken a tough stance on this issue. Last year, it passed new rules to ban real-money online gaming, calling it harmful and risky for citizens.

The ED’s ongoing investigation is part of a larger crackdown on illegal platforms that lure people into betting with promises of easy money but often result in major financial losses.
