South Africa have suffered a setback in their one-day series against England, with batter Tony de Zorzi ruled out after picking up a hamstring injury.

The injury happened during the first ODI at Headingley when de Zorzi dived on the boundary to stop a shot from Jos Buttler. While he managed to save the runs, he hurt his left hamstring in the process and had to leave the field. South Africa later chased a small target of 132, so he didn’t need to bat.

De Zorzi will now return home for scans to assess how bad the injury is. He wasn’t originally a first-choice starter but had been included in the playing XI because Matthew Breetzke was recovering from his own hamstring issue.

With Breetzke now fit again, he’s expected to take de Zorzi’s place in the second ODI on September 4. Notably, South Africa have not named a replacement player for de Zorzi.

Other Injury Concerns For South Africa

South Africa are also waiting for news on star fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, who is dealing with ankle inflammation. He missed the ODIs in Australia and didn’t play in the first match against England. Pace bowler Codi Yusuf, who has been playing county cricket in England, has joined the squad, suggesting Rabada might only be ready for the T20 series.

On top of that, captain Temba Bavuma is being carefully managed after an earlier injury. He played in two of the three ODIs in Australia and featured in the first game against England but is expected to be rested for one of the remaining matches.

Despite these injury concerns, South Africa lead the three-match series 1-0 after a record-breaking win in the first ODI. The second match will be played at Lord’s on Thursday.
