In a significant development, Pakistan have been fined 20 percent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate during the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi on Tuesday. The decision was made after Shaheen Afridi’s team was found to be four overs short of the required target, even after considering the standard time allowances given during play.
Pakistan fined for slow over-rate
As per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.
The charge was formally imposed by on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Asif Yaqoob, along with third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Rashid Riaz.
Despite the fine, Pakistan won the 1st ODI against Sri Lanka by six runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The 'Men in Green' posted a competitive total of 299 runs in 50 overs, anchored by an outstanding century from Salman Ali Agha, who scored 105 off 87 balls, and a valuable half-century from Hussain Talat (62).
Their solid partnership helped Pakistan recover from a shaky start and set up a challenging target for the visitors.
Sri Lanka, in response, fought valiantly with Wanindu Hasaranga leading the charge. The all-rounder played a quickfire half-century that almost turned the game in Sri Lanka’s favour.
With this win, Pakistan have taken an early advantage in the series. The second ODI between the two sides will take place on November 14, 2025, where Pakistan will aim to clinch the series, while Sri Lanka will look to make a comeback.
