In a significant development, the Mumbai Indians (MI) are reportedly in talks to bring back leg-spinner Mayank Markande from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). According to a recent report, MI is exploring an all-cash trade to reunite with one of their former players, aiming to strengthen their spin attack.
Markande, who was part of Mumbai’s title-winning squads in 2019 and 2020, started his IPL journey with the franchise back in 2018. At KKR, he found himself behind Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy in the spin department and did not play a single match during the 2025 IPL season.
Mumbai Indian's trade season heats up
The report from the Times of India suggests that talks between the two franchises (MI and KKR) are in the final stages, and an official announcement could be made soon regarding this trade deal.
It is worth noting that the trade is expected to be a cash-only transaction, with KKR having bought Markande for ₹30 lakh last season. If finalised, the move will mark a homecoming for the 28-year-old spinner, who impressed in his debut season with MI.
This potential trade comes amid a busy trading period for the Mumbai Indians. The five-time champions have also reportedly finalised trade deal to get in LSG's Shardul Thakur, while Arjun Tendulkar is said to be moving to LSG in a separate trade.
Rahul Chahar also on MI’s radar
The TOI report also mentioned that Rahul Chahar, another former MI spinner, could also make a return. Now with SRH, Chahar played just one match in the 2025 season and carries a price tag of ₹3.2 crore.
It is important to note that MI has reached out to SRH regarding Chahar’s availability, though it remains uncertain whether SRH will agree to part ways with him. The franchise may finalise one of the two trades or wait for the mini-auction to make their move.
