In a significant development, Bangladesh fast bowler Nahid Rana has been fined 25% of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the opening day of the first Test against Ireland in Sylhet on Tuesday.

According to an ICC statement, Nahid was found guilty of violating Article 2.9 of the Code, which is related to - "throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match."

Nahid’s throw hits batter’s pads

It is important to mention that the incident took place during the 27th over of Ireland’s first innings when Nahid fielded the ball on his follow-through and threw it back towards the striker’s end. His throw struck batter Cade Carmichael’s pads, even though the Irish player had not left the crease.

The action was deemed inappropriate and dangerous, leading to an immediate charge by the on-field officials. As part of the penalty, one demerit point has been added to Nahid’s disciplinary record, his first offence within a 24-month period.

It is worth noting that under the ICC’s Code of Conduct, a Level 1 offence carries a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum fine of 50% of a player’s match fee. Offenders may also receive one or two demerit points, depending on the severity of the incident.

Bangladesh dominate against Ireland

Despite the incident, Bangladesh continued to dominate proceedings in the first Test at Sylhet. On Day 2, opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy produced a superb unbeaten 169, guiding Bangladesh to 338 at the loss of just one wicket. The Bangla Tigers have secured 52-run lead after Ireland’s first-innings total of 286.

Ireland resumed Day 2 at 270 but managed only 16 more runs before being bowled out. The hosts now hold a strong position in the match, looking set to push for a decisive win in the series opener.
