In a significant development, during the ongoing third Test between India and England at Lord’s Cricket Ground, Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has been fined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the Code of Conduct. The penalty comes after Siraj’s aggressive send-off to English opener Ben Duckett, which took place on the fourth day of the match.

What Happened Between Siraj And Ben Duckett?

The incident occurred in the sixth over of England’s second innings on July 13. Siraj, who had been bowling with intensity, delivered a sharp delivery that led to the dismissal of Ben Duckett However, celebrations turned controversial when Siraj displayed excessive aggression by approaching Duckett, glaring at him, and shouting loudly as the batter walked back to the pavilion.

The visible show of anger and confrontation drew the attention of match officials, prompting the ICC to review the pacer’s conduct under its disciplinary framework.

ICC's Disciplinary Action On Siraj

The ICC found Siraj guilty of violating Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to using language, actions, or gestures that can provoke an aggressive reaction from a dismissed batter. After an official review, the governing body imposed a 15% fine on Siraj’s match fee.

In addition to the fine, one demerit point has been added to Siraj's disciplinary record. This is his second offence in a 24-month period, taking his tally to two demerit points.

Should he get to 4 demerit points before the 24 month window runs out, it will automatically trigger a suspension that will be eligible for one match.

Strong Performance Overshadowed

Despite the disciplinary issue, Mohammed Siraj has been a standout performer with the ball in the Lord’s Test. In the first innings, the Hyderabad pacer bowled 23.3 overs, claiming 2 wickets for 85 runs. He has continued his good form in the second innings as well, taking two crucial wickets, including those of Ollie Pope and the contentious dismissal of Ben Duckett.

It is important to mention that Siraj’s consistency at Lord’s has been notable, he now has 12 wickets at the iconic venue across Test matches.
