Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav, widely regarded as one of the finest T20 batter, recently opened up about the sacrifices he made on his journey to represent India. The star batter also opened about the vital role his wife, Devisha Shetty, in shaping his career. The couple appeared on the talk show "Who's the Boss?" hosted by former cricketer Harbhajan Singh and his wife, Geeta Basra.

During the candid interaction, Suryakumar reflected on a phase around 2016 when, despite scoring runs consistently, a national call-up seemed elusive.

"I was very content at that time. Whatever was happening, it was okay. I was enjoying the game, but it gradually dawned on me that there’s a bigger level ahead,” Suryakumar said.

He credited Devisha for being the turning point in his mindset. While he remained committed to the sport, Suryakumar admitted that the motivation to push harder and chase greater goals was not entirely there, until Devisha stepped into his life.

“I was wondering what to do when madam came into the picture. I reduced my friend circle, cut down on late-night outings and weekends. We focused on quality practice sessions and I brought some discipline into my life,” he shared.

Devisha’s Role: Gentle Guidance For SKY

Devisha, a trained classical dancer and a woman of determination, downplayed her role but acknowledged the subtle nudges she gave her husband to help him stay focused. The couple got married in 2016, and Devisha quickly noticed that while Suryakumar Yadav had the talent, his energy was being spread too thin.

“The urge was there in him to play for India, but it needed a stronger push. That was not coming from anywhere else, so I gave him that emotional support,” she said. She stressed that their focus was never on overnight success but on making consistent, positive changes in lifestyle and mindset. At that time, when we got married, I saw he needed a nudge. It took me a year to make him understand that friends are great, but work comes first. You need to stay focused and not let your time or energy be compromised,” Devisha added.

When Will Suryakumar Yadav Play Next For India?

After an intense season with the Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025, Suryakumar is currently on a break with no international cricket commitments until October. With India’s tour of Bangladesh officially rescheduled, his next assignment will be leading India in a T20I series against Australia. Until then, the dynamic batter is expected to enjoy some downtime with his family and regroup for the international season ahead.
