The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced India’s 15-player squad for their upcoming five-match T20I tour of Zimbabwe.

In a significant move, the selection committee picked dashing opening batter Shubman Gill as the new captain of the team in the absence of several senior members like Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya and regular skipper Rohit Sharma.

Nearly each member of India’s travelling party for Zimbabwe was excluded from team’s 2024 T20 World Cup group, which is currently in the West Indies for the final week of the tournament.

Players like Abhishek Sharma, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Riyan Parag and irregular international stars like Sanju Samson, Rinku Singh, Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar are set to fly to Harare in the first week of July for the impending T20I series.

While the recently-concluded IPL 2024 season served as the chief catalyst for the selection committee for the tour of Zimbabwe, a number of top performers from the tournament were surprisingly excluded from the squad.

Top IPL 2024 stars who missed call-up for ZIM tour

Harshit Rana

Delhi fast bowler Harshit Rana picked up 19 wickets for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2024. The cricketer claimed two of those wickets during his match-winning spell against SRH in the title clash. Despite his impressive run with the ball for KKR and Delhi in domestic cricket, Rana is yet to make his international debut in any of the three formats for Team India.

Rajat Patidar

Rajat Patidar made his ODI debut last December and played three Tests for Team India at home earlier this year. The right-handed batter had a prolific IPL 2024 season for the RCB, tallying 395 runs at an average of nearly 31 with five half-centuries in the process. However, the 31-year-old was overlooked by the selection committee for India’s T20 World Cup campaign as well as for the tour of Zimbabwe.

Varun Chakravarthy

KKR spinner Varun Chakravarthy played the last of his six T20Is for India back in November 2021. While the 32-year-old recently contributed with 21 wickets in KKR’s victorious IPL 2024 campaign, his wait for a return to the Indian team is set to last longer than expected.

Shashank Singh

Middle-order run-raider Shashank Singh plundered 354 runs in 14 IPL 2024 games for the Punjab Kings, doing so at an astonishing strike-rate of 164.65. However, the Chhattisgarh cricketer continues to be on the sidelines in terms of a potential national debut.

Sai Sudharsan

Gujarat Titans youngster Sai Sudharsan made 527 runs in IPL 2024 to emerge as the sixth highest run-getter of the tournament. Despite his prolific run in IPL since 2022, Sudharsan is yet to receive a T20I cap for Team India.
