'GOAT Is Back' - Netizens Go Wild After Rohit Sharma Returns As India's T20I Captain vs AFG

Rohit Sharma is set to make his comeback to T20Is after a 14-month gap through India’s upcoming home series against Afghanistan. On January 7, i.e., a few days prior to the series opener, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India’s 16-player line-up for the three matches, which also serves as team’s final set of fixtures before the 2024 T20 World Cup in June this year.

Sharma, in his comeback series, will also be leading the Indian team once again, thus taking over the role from standby skippers Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav.

Mere minutes after BCCI unveiled the team’s line-up, scores of Indian cricket fans flocked to X (formerly Twitter) and expressed their mixed reactions over Sharma’s return. Here at OneCricket, we take a look at some of the reactions shared by fans on the microblogging site.

Twitter reacts as Rohit Sharma reinstated as T20I captain

Rohit Sharma last represented Team India at the T20I level during the 2022 T20 World Cup in November 2022. Following India’s crashing defeat to England in the semifinals of the tournament under his leadership, the cricketer distanced himself from the format to focus on ODIs and Test matches for India.

In his absence, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav sporadically led the ‘Men in Blue’ in T20Is instead.

Back in December 2023, i.e., a month after India’s humiliating defeat to Australia at the 2023 ODI World Cup final, Rohit Sharma was sacked from his Mumbai Indians leadership role to make way for Hardik. The move made by the Mumbai Indians management drew in a slew of fan reactions, with several cricket enthusiasts speculating that Pandya will also be taking over Team India captaincy role going ahead.

As it turned out, the BCCI eventually recalled Sharma back into India’s T20I side, as its skipper no less, in a T20 World Cup year. While several Indian cricket fans celebrated his reinstatement, some questioned the decision citing his prior T20 World Cup record.

Moreover, a certain number of fans also jokingly expressed their astonishment over the fact that Sharma is still India’s national captain but not the captain of his IPL franchise Mumbai Indians.

Here is a look at some of the fans reacting to BCCI’s move of bringing back Rohit Sharma as captain of the Indian T20I team, mere months prior to the T20 World Cup 2024.

India’s series against Afghanistan will be played between January 11 and January 17 across Mohali, Indore and Bangalore. The series, coupled with the forthcoming IPL 2024 season serve as a dress rehearsal for both sides in lieu of this year’s T20 World Cup 2024, which itself is set to be staged in June in the West Indies and in the United States.
