Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir cautioned South Africa after the ICC unveiled the team listings for the 2024 T20 World Cup. As per the tournament groupings, South Africa find themselves placed in Group D alongside Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and recent nemesis Netherlands.

Back during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, South Africa suffered a shock defeat to Netherlands in their final group game, which eventually led to their elimination from the tournament. Moreover, the Proteas also slumped to a 38-run hammering at Dharamshala in last year’s 2023 World Cup.

According to Gambhir, the South African team is placed in a ‘Group of Death’ at the forthcoming T20 event, and claimed that qualifying for the Super Eights will not be an easy task for the Proteas.

Gautam Gambhir cautions South Africa for T20 WC 2024

Gautam Gambhir has expressed his hope that South Africa will be able to qualify for the Super Eight stage in this year’s T20 World Cup 2024. Fully aware of their recent struggles against Netherlands at ICC events, the cricketer did claim that their journey will not be an easy one, considering they are placed in a “Group of Death.”

During a discussion on the Star Sports network, Gautam Gambhir said:

“It seems like but who knows South Africa might survive that death this time. I hope they do that because you want to see good teams in the Super 8. You want to see a competition where you are challenged. The group you have mentioned, it's not going to be easy for South Africa because you have limited opportunity to make a comeback in the T20 format. If someone puts you under pressure, you don't have time to make a comeback. I hope South Africa play good cricket and reach the Super 8 at least.”

The T20 World Cup 2024 will be played between June 1 and June 29 across several West Indies and United States venues.

South Africa will get their campaign started with a Group D game against Sri Lanka. The match will be hosted by the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 3. The Proteas will subsequently face Netherlands at the same venue on June 8.
