Marnus Labuschagne has been one of the most prolific batters for Australia in the Whites. Now, his national side teammate, Beau Webster has voiced strong support for Labuschagne. Webster expressed his thoughts on whether the experienced batter should be chosen to open for Australia in the upcoming World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord's.

Webster Confident With Labuschagne To Perform At The Top

Despite Labuschagne managing only one Test century since late 2022 and averaging a mere nine in his current Glamorgan stint, Webster remains confident of his abilities.

Australia also has young opener Sam Konstas as an option alongside Usman Khawaja, while Cameron Green's return intensifies competition for spots.

“When he’s at his best, he’s unbelievable. His record speaks for itself. He’s a hundred-maker and a game-winner. I’m sure going to the top (of the batting) wouldn’t faze him too much. Whoever gets the nod for that final is going to be raring to go," Webster said.

Webster's backing of Marnus Labuschagne is fascinating given the fact that he never opened for Australia in Tests and is yet to prove himself in that position. His best came at No. 3 where he amassed 3956 runs at an average of 48.84.

Webster On His Own Spot In The Playing XI

Speaking of himself, Webster finds himself in direct competition with Green for a place in the final XI. He acknowledged Green's talent while expressing his own desire to feature as quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald

“He (Green) is a generational talent and a phenomenal cricketer. He’s only going to get better. He’s only 25, so he’s got a lot of cricket ahead of him," Webster said.

For the unaware, Australia will be eyeing the WTC mace for the second consecutive time when they square off against South Africa at Lord's on June 11 for the one-off Test.
