In a major turn of events, BCCI is said to be considering appointing a batting coach to the Indian men's senior cricket team's coaching setup. According to Cricbuzz, the suggestion was reportedly made during the recently held review meeting of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy fallout.
India's Border-Gavaskar series defeat seems to be leading to more condemnation of the current head coach Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir's period with the Indian side has witnessed shocking defeats that raised a huge, loud cry over his axing.
Amid mounting pressure from the fans, BCCI held a review meeting in Mumbai on January 11, featuring Gambhir, captain Rohit Sharma, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and senior board officials.
BCCI likely to fill void of a batting coach
According to the latest report from Cricbuzz, BCCI has been suggested to mull the addition of a batting coach. Gambhir-led coaching setup currently consists of Abhishek Nayar (assistant coach), fielding coach (T Dilip), and Morne Morkel (bowling coach.)
The issue of a batting coach's absence was first raised after senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma registered abysmal scores and averages on the tour. While Kohli mustered a total of 190 runs in nine innings, Rohit scored only 31 runs in five innings.
The report further indicated that former domestic stalwarts are among those being considered for the role, though no names have been officially confirmed.
India's recent performance, especially in Test cricket, has brought much pressure on the efficiency of the coaching staff. It remains to be seen whether the BCCI will stick to the idea of appointing a batting coach but it might eventually be the silver lining that could save the day for the team, ensuring better performance in the days to come.
Sarfaraz Khan blamed for media leaks
During the Australian tour, details of the Indian dressing room conversations were leaked in the media. Gautam Gambhir reportedly had a go at the seniors, leading to a rift with captain Rohit Sharma. These media leaks stirred a huge controversy.
Meanwhile, according to TV9, when Gambhir was confronted during the BCCI review meeting about the leaks, he blamed Sarfaraz Khan. The head coach reportedly informed the board that Sarfaraz went behind the team's back and gave a secret media interview.
