Gautam Gambhir is all set to start his maiden assignment as India head coach with a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. There is lot of hype around him, after his success with Kolkata Knight Riders, and a lot is expected from the former Indian opener.

However, Sanjay Manjrekar, the former Indian cricketer and a renowned commentator has now played down the importance of Gautam Gambhir and overall the role of a coach in team's success.

Manjrekar on role of Indian coach

Manjrekar named Indian coaches in their wins in four World Cups so far, and added that it about how the team is, and not who the coach is. He urged people to not make any correlation between the coach and team's success, indirectly taking a dig at the hype Gautam Gambhir's appointment has created.

"No coach, Lalchand Rajput, Gary Kirsten & Dravid. Coaches when India won WCs in 1983, 2007, 2011 & 2023. It’s really about Indian cricket, not who the coach is. Time we stop thinking there is a direct correlation."

India will play three T20Is which will see Suryakumar Yadav leading the Men in Blue while in the ODI series, Rohit Sharma will be back in the leadership role.
