Gautam Gambhir, known for his unorthodox opinions, named a surprise pick upon being asked to give his take on India’s greatest ever batsman of all time. The cricketer named his former teammate and 2011 World Cup star during a rapid-fire quiz with prominent motivational speaker Dr. Vivek Bindra.

Gambhir names 2011 World Cup winner as India’s greatest

Gautam Gambhir was given three options in the form of all-time greats Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli by Dr. Vivek Bindra in his segment. The former opening batsman ignored the trio and instead chose all-rounder Yuvraj Singh.

Both Singh and Gambhir were teammates in India’s triumphant runs at the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa and the 2011 World Cup at home.

For long, Gambhir has expressed his admiration for the underachieving all-rounder. He has often emphasised that Yuvraj was not given enough credit for his role at the 2011 World Cup, even though the former all-rounder played through the entire tournament while battling cancer.

Remarkably, Gambhir himself was India’s top-scorer in both finals, with his 75 and 97 serving as the catalysts behind India’s remarkable wins in 2007 and 2011 respectively.

Yuvraj Singh, on the other hand, made his final international appearance in 2017. The cricketer announced his retirement from senior-level two years later at a press conference in Mumbai. During his 17-year journey with the Indian team, Singh played 304 ODIs and 58 T20Is and piled up nearly 10,000 runs in both formats combined.

The legendary all-rounder failed to replicate his success in Tests, he scored his runs at an average of below 34 in his 40 appearances.
