Former Indian cricketer, Gautam Gambhir opened up on the upcoming contest between Pakistan captain, Babar Azam and India's robust pace trio in Asia Cup 2023 clash on Saturday, September 2.

Gambhir lauds Babar and anticipates exciting duel with Indian pacers

While acknowledging Babar's commendable century against Nepal, Gambhir was quick to point out that the Pakistani captain's outstanding record of 19 centuries in 104 matches already establishes him as a cricketing force. He doesn't require any further validation.

"Babar Azam doesn't need to give any message. He has given a message in the 104 matches he has played. If you can score 19 centuries in 104 matches, I believe he will be in the top two or three players in all formats. So he doesn't need to give a message," said Gambhir.

Nevertheless, the Asia Cup clash 2023 between the two cricketing giants will see Babar pitted against India's premier fast bowlers: Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, and Mohammed Siraj.

Gambhir insinuated that this showdown is not just about national pride but also an opportunity for Babar to further stamp his authority against a top-tier bowling lineup, a challenge that greats in the sport often eagerly anticipate.

"However, it will be a good contest. He will be tested against the Indian fast bowling. You will get to see an Indian attack after a long time, where all three bowlers (Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, and Mohammed Siraj) can test Babar Azam properly,” added the former southpaw.

It is worth mentioning that while Babar has a staggering 5,353 ODI runs at a stunning average of 59.47, he's yet to leave a significant mark against India, with a total of 158 runs in five innings, averaging 31.60.

As the cricket world gears up for the anticipated showdown in Pallekele, Pakistan holds a morale boost with their recent victory over Nepal. In contrast, India is set to kickstart their Asia Cup campaign 2023 against their arch rivals.
