The relentless pursuit of excellence from legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli has solidified his standing as one of the most popular and revered figures in modern-day cricket. Fans, experts, active and former players alike have repeatedly admired his unwavering passion for the game.
His former Delhi and national teammate as well as current Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has also gone on record to praise the modern-day batting icon. Quite recently, Gambhir even described Kohli the ‘Shahenshah’ of cricket while attending a Delhi Premier League (DPL) game in Delhi.
Virat Kohli the ‘emperor’: Gambhir
Virat Kohli, who unfurled the ‘shot of an emperor’ at the 2022 T20 World Cup according to on-air commentators, is an ‘emperor’ indeed, at least according to current Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir.
On September 11, the former Indian opening batter attended a DPL 2024 game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. During a mid-innings break, the sports presenter asked Gambhir to name the ‘Shahenshah’ (emperor) of cricket. The Delhi-based legend instantly responded back with the name of his ex-Ranji Trophy and national teammate.
Virat Kohli recently announced his retirement from T20I cricket. The former Indian captain did so moments after lifting the 2024 T20 World Cup trophy alongside his teammates in the West Indies.
Currently enjoying a rare break from international cricket, Kohli is on course to return to the Indian cricket team for the impending two-match home Test series against Bangladesh. The first match of the series will be played at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai between September 19 and September 23.
The series will also mark Gautam Gambhir’s first Test assignment ever since he took over Team India’s coaching role from Rahul Dravid.
