Despite getting snubbed from BCCI's central contract list, Shreyas Iyer is likely to make a comeback to the national side in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. The news comes days after KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir was interviewed for the head coach's role.

Shreyas Iyer, the IPL winning captain, was dropped from the central contract list by BCCI earlier this year for violating discipline measures. Iyer and Ishan Kishan were reprimanded for not prioritising domestic cricket.

However, Iyer took the setback by heart and responded with a title victory for KKR in IPL 2024. Captain Iyer and mentor Gautam Gambhir were the key catalysts in KKR's win.

And now, both Shreyas Iyer and Gautam Gambhir are expected to be rewarded for their heroics.

As per Inside Sport, Iyer will likely return to the national side for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour despite not having a central contract. India will play an ODI series in Sri Lanka during the July-August period.

Notably, rumours of Iyer's comeback have just flared up a day after KKR mentor Gambhir was interviewed for India's head coach's position

While Gambhir's appointment is yet to be confirmed, the SL tour could be one of his first assignments if things fall in place.

Hence, it's highly likely that Iyer's return could have been fuelled by Gambhir, who is expected to be given a big responsibility in the national side going forward.

Additionally, rumours state that many young players from the IPL will be rewarded with the Indian cap for the Zimbabwe tour. Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav, Nitish Reddy, Harshit Rana, and Yash Dayal, amongst many more, are in the mix for the Zimbabwe T20I series.
