Ireland Women have faced a second significant setback in a week, with star batter Gaby Lewis forced to withdraw from the ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka.

Lewis, who had taken over captaincy duties after Laura Delany's injury, has suffered a quad strain that rules her out of the remaining matches.

The Ireland opener Gaby Lewis shone in the second T20I against Sri Lanka, scoring a 119 runs off 75 balls that highlighted her form.

After Delany sustained an injury, Lewis stepped up to lead Ireland for the three-match ODI series. However, just days later, her own injury has sidelined her, leaving the squad without two of their most experienced leaders.

Orla Prendergast to lead Ireland Women vs SL

Orla Prendergast will now captain Ireland Women for the first time at the international level, becoming the 19th player to lead the team. Arlene Kelly will serve as vice-captain, while Christina Coulter Reilly has been called up as cover.

Despite these challenges, head coach Ed Joyce remains optimistic. He acknowledged the loss of both Lewis and Delany but praised the team’s depth of talent developed over recent years.

With a 1-0 lead in the series, Ireland Women will face Sri Lanka in the second ODI at Stormont on August 20. In the first ODI, Ireland secured a narrow victory by three wickets, showing resilience under pressure.
