KKR vs PBKS was called off [Source: @IPLT20.com]
Cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties and sometimes, the biggest opponent isn't the team across the pitch, it’s the weather gods themselves. The IPL has given us countless thrilling contests but it has also seen its fair share of heartbreaks where rain, lightning and strong winds have had the final say.
With the recent washout between KKR and PBKS at Eden Gardens in IPL 2025 Match 44, it's the perfect time to take a stroll down memory lane and revisit all the abandoned matches in IPL history since 2008.
IPL 2025, Match 44, KKR vs PBKS
The latest rain spoil came when Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings were ready for a high-stakes battle at Eden Gardens. Chasing a target of 202, Sunil Narine and Rahmanullah Gurbaz barely got through the first over when rain while strong winds and lightning barged in.
After an hour-long wait and no signs of mercy from the skies, the match was abandoned and both teams split points. PBKS jumped to fourth, while KKR stayed stuck at seventh.
IPL 2024, Match 63, GT vs KKR
In IPL 2024, Gujarat Titans' final home game against KKR at the Narendra Modi Stadium ended without a ball being bowled. Persistent rain made sure even a five-over shootout was off the cards. The washout knocked GT out of playoff contention while KKR sneaked into the top two.
IPL 2024, Match 66, SRH vs GT
The SRH vs GT match in Hyderabad was another no-show with the rain hammering down relentlessly. SRH didn’t mind too much though as the shared point was enough to secure their playoff berth.
IPL 2017, Match 29, SRH vs RCB
The 2017 edition saw a crucial playoff-impacting game between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bengaluru washed away. Heavy rain in Bengaluru left no room even for a curtailed match. While SRH marched into the playoffs, RCB finished rock-bottom in a season to forget for Virat Kohli’s men.
IPL 2015, Match 25, KKR vs RR
Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals were ready to battle it out at Eden Gardens in 2015. But a damp outfield played spoilsport and not a ball was bowled. RR gladly took the point and moved up to the top of the table.
IPL 2012, Match 32, KKR vs DC (Deccan Chargers)
Back in 2012, Eden Gardens again bore the brunt of rain, with the KKR vs Deccan Chargers match abandoned. For the Deccan Chargers, it was a small mercy — they had lost their first six games and this point finally got them off the mark.
IPL 2009, Match 7, MI vs RR
Sporadic rain in Durban meant Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals never got started. Both teams were struggling that year and this washout didn’t help much.
IPL 2009, Match 13, CSK vs KKR
The clash between Chennai Super Kings and KKR at Cape Town also got washed out before a ball was bowled. Ironically, both sides went on to finish strong in the league.
IPL 2008, Match 47, DD vs KKR
The very first abandoned match in IPL history happened during the inaugural season itself. Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Kolkata Knight Riders saw their match in Delhi washed out without a ball being bowled. The result helped Kings XI Punjab sneak into the playoffs, while KKR's season ended in disappointment.
Kolkata Knight Riders Have The Most Bad Luck
If there is one team that rain seems to love haunting, it’s the Kolkata Knight Riders. Over the years, KKR has seen seven matches abandoned, the most by any franchise in IPL history. From 2008 to 2025, whenever clouds gather, KKR seem to end up on the wrong end of the stick.
