Towhid Hridoy gets banned again [Source: @somoytv/x.com]
Just when Mohammedan Sporting Club needed their skipper, Towhid Hridoy the most, trouble has come knocking once again. In a major twist ahead of their crunch clash against Abahani Limited, Hridoy has found himself slapped with a fresh suspension that has jeopardized Mohammedan’s title hopes.
Fresh Demerit Point Adds To Towhid Hridoy’s Woes
The Dhaka Premier League has seen its fair share of drama this season but Hridoy’s suspension saga is fast becoming the biggest headline of them all. Towhid Hridoy's actions during Mohammedan’s last match against Gazi Group Cricketers have landed him in hot water yet again.
After being dismissed, the skipper stood his ground, pointed at the pitch and shook his head in visible dissent, actions the match officials classified as a Level 1 offense under the BDPL Code of Conduct. The punishment was swift: a fine of Tk 10,000 and one demerit point added to his name.
Eight Demerit Points And A Four-Match Ban
One demerit point might not seem much in isolation but for Hridoy, it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. The latest offense has pushed his tally to eight demerit points, automatically triggering a four-match suspension.
As per the rulebook, he will miss Mohammedan’s all-important clash against Abahani and three more games in the next DPL season.
Chairman of BCB’s Umpires’ Committee, Iftekhar Rahman Mithu, spelled it out clearly:
"If you see it in slow-motion, you can see how seamlessly it went. If you are caught out and then say you are not out, what is there to do? This is at the very least a Level 1 breach which imposes one demerit point. If this adds on, then he has eight demerit points. Eight demerit points means a four-match suspension. He will not be able to play the next four matches, including Mohammedan's next match against Abahani."
No Show At The Hearing
If things weren't bad enough already, Hridoy made matters worse by not attending the disciplinary hearing. Skipping the hearing didn’t help his cause one bit and has only strengthened the case for enforcing the suspension without any leniency.
Now, the ball is firmly in the court of the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) to decide whether the ban kicks in before the title clash.
Past Run-Ins Come Back To Haunt Hridoy
This isn’t the first time Towhid Hridoy has flirted with trouble in the DPL. Earlier, he was slapped with a two-match suspension, but it was deferred for 12 months following heavy lobbying from influential figures, including star cricketer Tamim Iqbal.
As things stand, Mohammedan’s captain is staring down the barrel just before the biggest game of the season. If the CCDM pushes through the suspension before Tuesday, it’ll leave a gaping hole in Mohammedan’s lineup against Abahani Limited.
