The exclusion of Shubman Gill from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad is the result of a series of decisions taken over several months, rather than one sudden call. Apparently, the BCCI ran out of patience to shelve their project of making Gill the face of the new era.

The timeline began in Lucknow when Gill was ruled out of the 4th T20I against South Africa, citing a foot injury that he allegedly sustained while batting in the nets.

Injury used a smokescreen to oust Shubman Gill?

However, according to TOI, the injury was merely used as an easy exit route. The report states that chief selector Ajit Agarkar flew to Lucknow on the morning of the 4th T20I, and by evening, Shubman Gill was mysteriously dropped.

The timing of these two events is not believed to be just a coincidence. Apparently, the management had already decided to move on from Gill in the shortest format, starting with that match.

Some reports even claim that Gill wanted to play the 5th T20I in Ahmedabad, as he felt the injury was not serious. But he was told to ‘avoid any risk.’

To many, the news of Shubman’s exclusion from the T20 World Cup squad came as a shocker, given that he was appointed the vice-captain for extra safety.

However, the management allegedly ran out of patience long ago. Shubman Gill struggled to adapt to the demands of T20 cricket, where high strike rates and constant pressure are essential.

The management expected him to provide stability without slowing the scoring, but that balance was rarely achieved. His lack of runs over an extended period became difficult to ignore.

Red-ball players opposed by the white-ball leadership group

There were also alleged internal reservations about Test players moving in and out of the T20 side. The leadership group, including captain Suryakumar Yadav, was reportedly not fully comfortable with frequent changes caused by red-ball commitments.

As a result, players such as Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who were earlier asked to focus on Tests after the 2024 T20 World Cup, have all missed out on the upcoming edition.
