In a significant development, reports indicate that India's star batter, Suryakumar Yadav, is expected to be removed as T20I captain after the 2026 T20 World Cup. The right-handed batter is struggling for form, and the selectors have had enough and feel that the time is right to look for a new leader for the next World Cup cycle.

A report from India today mentioned that the selectors had made up their mind a long time ago to remove SKY as the captain, but refrained from experimenting with the team's combination a few months before the T20 World Cup. Therefore, the 35-year-old is set to be removed as captain and is likely to lose his spot in the Indian team as well.

The right-handed batter is struggling for form and is having a forgetful year for the Indian team. Talking about his stats in 2025, the 35-year-old has 218 runs in 19 innings, averaging 13.62, registering his worst year with the bat since making his debut.

Besides the form, SKY is nearing 36 and will be 38 by the time the 2028 World Cup comes close. Therefore, it is unlikely that Suryakumar Yadav will continue by then, which is why the selectors are looking for a new face for the No. 3 or No. 4 slot in the Indian team.

Suryakumar Yadav addresses a dip in his form

Suryakumar Yadav recently addressed the press where he stated that he is doing well in the nets and is just out of runs.

"I think basics are very important. The thing is, I am batting beautifully in the nets. I am trying everything I can, whatever is in my control. When the runs have to come, they will definitely come. I am not out of form but definitely out of runs," Suryakumar said.

In a nutshell, the T20 World Cup 2026 is last chance for Suryakumar Yadav to prove his worth and retain his place in the team.
