Indian cricket witnessed a flurry of major developments on Saturday, December 20, as the squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 was announced with some shocking omissions.

In Adelaide, the third Ashes 2025 Test is shaping up towards a significant result. On that note, let’s recap the top 5 news that emerged from the cricketing world on December 20.

Shubman Gill dropped from India’s T20 World Cup squad

India announced their T20 World Cup 2026 squad, springing a few major surprises. Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal were left out as the selectors opted for a more aggressive top-order approach. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side, with Axar Patel named vice-captain.

Ishan Kishan returned to the squad after strong domestic form, preferred over Jitesh Sharma for his flexibility at the top. Rinku Singh is back as India’s designated finisher, while Jasprit Bumrah headlines the bowling attack.

England lose 6 wickets on Day 4 of the Adelaide Test

At stumps on Day 4 of the third Ashes 2025 Test, England were 207/8 in a 435-run chase. Nathan Lyon struck three times for just seven runs, dismissing Harry Brook, Ben Stokes and Zak Crawley in a decisive late spell.

Earlier, Pat Cummins removed the top order, leaving Australia just four wickets away from sealing the series. Meanwhile, England still need 228 runs to win. If they fall short, the visitors will lose the Ashes 2025 with a 0-3 trail.

Rohit Sharma to skip initial VHT games

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma will miss Mumbai’s first two matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 as the selectors have opted to field a young squad early in the tournament.

Mumbai chief selector Sanjay Patil confirmed that Rohit, along with Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube, has been rested to give youngsters an opportunity. Yashasvi Jaiswal will also sit out the opening games due to a recent health issue, with all seniors expected to return later.

Zimbabwe confirm captaincy transition

Zimbabwe Cricket has appointed left-arm fast bowler Richard Ngarava as the new captain of the Test and ODI teams, replacing Craig Ervine. The decision marks a new phase for Zimbabwe, with Ngarava becoming only the second fast bowler after Heath Streak to lead the Test side.

He has been a key performer across formats, taking 25 wickets in 11 Tests and 70 wickets in 55 ODIs. Young batter Brian Bennett has been named vice-captain.

Mohammed Shami to lead Bengal in Vijay Hazare

Fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been named in Bengal’s squad for the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy. The seamer, who last played for India in March 2025, has impressed in domestic cricket after returning from injury, taking 36 wickets across formats this season.

Shami will link up with Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep under captain Abhimanyu Easwaran, starting Bengal’s campaign against Vidarbha on December 24 in Rajkot.
