The defending T20 World Cup champions have unveiled another explosive squad for the upcoming edition, but with a twist. Team India’s vice-captain, Shubman Gill, who was struggling with his current form, has been snubbed from the squad.
His run-drought sparked buzz, but the omission didn’t just stun fans, as the Test captain himself was taken by surprise. As per the reports, he learned about his omission just a little ahead of the final announcement.
T20 World Cup snub leaves Gill caught off guard
There is no doubt about Shubman Gill’s ability, but the recently ended T20I series against South Africa was a nightmare for him.
In three matches, Gill scored only 32 runs and sparked criticism on his ongoing form. With the T20 World Cup 2026 less than 50 days away, the selectors named the squad, and Gill was left out.
Despite the ongoing struggle, fans didn’t expect his removal from the 15-member squad, as the batter was mentally preparing for the marquee event.
But a recent Cricbuzz report indicated a shocking truth. Gill reportedly learned about his omission only moments before captain Suryakumar Yadav and chief selector Ajit Agarkar made the official announcement on Saturday.
After missing out on the fifth T20I against the Proteas, the Indian Test skipper was flying back home when he received a call regarding his omission, and left stunned.
The same report says that despite carrying a foot injury, he was keen to play the final T20I but was asked to rest with the World Cup in focus.
Who broke the heartbreaking news to him is still not known, but the snub came as a massive disappointment for him as he was preparing hard for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand and the T20 World Cup. In his absence, Sanju Samson is set to get the chance to open the innings in the upcoming clashes.
A series to forget, but a comeback brews
After missing out on the ODI series against South Africa, Shubman Gill came back as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy in the five-match T20I series. He expected a fiery return, but the series ended up being a massive disappointment.
After scoring 4 and a duck in the first two matches, Gill scored 28 runs in the third match before missing the final two matches.
Fingers pointed at him, questions raised on his T20I future, but the cricket world didn’t expect his snub as he was the T20I vice-captain.
However, the Indian batter is now looking forward to a mighty comeback. With the Vijay Hazare Trophy around the corner, he’ll rejoin his domestic side before stepping into the ODI series against New Zealand in January 2026.
